Fascia is a connective tissue that wraps around and supports every muscle, tendon, ligament, joint, nerve, organ, etc in the body—like saran wrap. It forms the actual shape of the human body.
Causes
Fascial restrictions can occur from inflammation, trauma, poor movement, scar tissue,
emotional distress, nutritional deficiencies, and toxicities.
Altered Biomechanics
Bad fascia alters movement patterns causing strain to other parts of the body.
A problem in one area of the fascia can affect distant parts of the body due to the interconnected nature of the fascia system.
Foot → Knee → Hip → Shoulder etc
Compensatory patterns may arise when fascia becomes restricted, potentially creating pain or dysfunction in other parts of the body including body organs. For example, in the above pathway, a sprained ankle (injury) can, overtime, create altered compensation in the knee, hip, shoulder etc. This brings back the old question which came first, the chicken or the egg. Which came first the back, neck, shoulder, hip etc problem. Often the real problem is silent with no pain at all.
